What Does It Cost to Own a Share in a Racehorse?

For many racing fans, owning a racehorse can feel like something reserved for the very wealthy. However, syndicate ownership has made it possible to experience genuine racehorse ownership without purchasing and funding an entire horse yourself.
At Vesper Solis Racing, ownership opportunities currently start with a £150 one-off buy-in and £55 per month.
But what do these payments mean, what do they cover, and are there any other costs to consider?
Understanding the Two Main Costs
When you purchase a share in one of our racehorses, the cost is divided into two parts:
1. The One-Off Buy-In
The buy-in secures your percentage share in the horse.
The amount depends on the ownership percentage you choose:
1.25% share: £150 one-off buy-in
2.5% share: £375 one-off buy-in
5% share: £700 one-off buy-in
The larger the share, the greater your proportion of any prize money or future sale proceeds, in accordance with the syndicate agreement.
Interest-free payment plans are available for the one-off buy-in, helping new owners spread the initial cost over an agreed period.
Payment plans apply to the buy-in only. Your ownership share, monthly payments and associated benefits begin once the buy-in has been paid in full.
2. The Monthly Ownership Fee
The monthly fee contributes towards the ongoing cost of keeping your racehorse in professional training.
Our current monthly fees are:
1.25% share: £55 per month
2.5% share: £90 per month
5% share: £170 per month
These payments allow the costs of training, caring for and racing the horse to be shared fairly between the syndicate members.
What Does the Monthly Fee Cover?
A racehorse requires professional care every day—not only when it is entered to race.
Your monthly ownership fee contributes towards:
* Full professional training and daily yard care
* Routine veterinary treatment
* Farrier costs
* Physiotherapy and dentistry
* Race entries and administration
* Transport to and from race meetings
* Insurance and associated running costs
* Ongoing syndicate management
* Contingency provision
From everyday care at the yard to the practical arrangements surrounding race day, every part of the horse’s training and racing programme must be carefully managed.
What Would a Full Year of Ownership Cost?
Based on our current prices, the approximate cost over 12 months would be:
1.25% ownership: £150 buy-in plus £660 in monthly fees £810 in total
2.5% ownership: £375 buy-in plus £1,080 in monthly fees £1,455 in total
5% ownership: £700 buy-in plus £2,040 in monthly fees £2,740 in total
These examples show the cost of the initial buy-in and 12 monthly payments. Your precise cost may vary depending on when you join and the agreed ownership term, so everything will be explained clearly before you commit.
What Do You Receive as a Syndicate Owner?
Racehorse ownership is about much more than having your name connected to a horse.
Owners with Vesper Solis Racing can expect:
* Regular updates from the trainer and syndicate
* Photographs and videos showing their horse’s progress
* Greater insight into training and race planning
* Stable visits where possible
* Race-day involvement
* Owners’ badges when available
* A share of prize money
* A proportionate share of future sale proceeds
* The opportunity to follow a racehorse’s journey from behind the scenes
We keep our ownership groups deliberately small so that the experience remains personal, welcoming and genuinely involving.
Is Prize Money Guaranteed?
No and we believe it is important to be honest about that.
Racehorses are athletes, not financial investments. Results, prize money and future value can never be guaranteed. Training and race plans may also change because of a horse’s development, wellbeing, the available races, ground conditions or veterinary advice.
Ownership should therefore be approached as an experience: the enjoyment of following your horse, visiting the yard, receiving regular updates and sharing the anticipation of race day with other owners.
Any prize money is an exciting benefit, but it should not be viewed as a guaranteed return.
Why Are Different Share Sizes Available?
Not every owner wants the same level of financial commitment.
A **1.25% share** offers an accessible introduction to ownership while still providing a genuine connection to the horse.
A **2.5% share** suits someone looking for a larger involvement and a greater percentage of prize money and future sale proceeds.
A **5% share** provides a more substantial stake for owners wanting to become even more closely involved in the journey.
Whichever level you choose, you are joining the same ownership group and following the same horse. The experience, communication and sense of involvement are not reserved only for the largest shareholders.
Is Racehorse Ownership Right for You?
Syndicate ownership may be right for you if you want to experience racing from a completely different perspective.
It is for people who want to understand what happens behind the scenes, follow a horse’s development, experience the anticipation of declarations and share the excitement—and occasional disappointment—that comes with racing.
At Vesper Solis Racing, we are not trying to build the biggest syndicate. We are building something more personal.
Our horses, Nightspell and Hellcat, are both trained in Newmarket by Ross Burdon, with a limited number of ownership opportunities currently available.
If you are unsure which horse or ownership level would suit you, speak directly with Vic. We will explain the options clearly and help you decide with absolutely no pressure.
